Medical Oncology

Medical oncology specialists are highly trained to diagnose and treat cancer and blood disorders. At St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, we use the latest techniques and technologies in chemotherapy; biological, hormonal, and targeted therapies; stem cell transplant; and other treatments to help you achieve your best possible results. We also work in partnership with you, your primary care provider, and other specialists to make sure you receive the most effective, evidence-based care, including access to clinical trials.

    Krishna C. Alluri, MD, is an oncologist/hematologist. He earned his medical degree from Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He completed his hematology and oncology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, where he served as chief fellow.

    Biography

    Rekha Chandran, MD, DNB is an experienced oncologist and medical educator, and has received multiple awards for medical student training. She was a first rank diplomate for the national board exam, and has multiple presentations and publications on cancer.

    Dr. Chandran is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Hematology, and the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

    In her free time, Dr. Chandran loves to travel, and has had the opportunity to live in India, Nigeria, England, and the United States. She enjoys British comedies, outdoor activities, and spending time with her family.

    Biography

    Amy Cruz, NP is a family practice nurse practitioner. She has experience in the operating room, neurosurgery, and treating substance abuse. She is also experienced in palliative care medicine, having provided care in both the outpatient and hospice care settings. She found palliative medicine both exciting and challenging, and was thrilled to specialize in this area.

    Amy is a Utah native and is excited to become an Idahoan. She enjoys exercising, yoga, meditation, golfing, and of course spending time with family and friends.

    Linda L. Erlandson, RN, MSN, FNP works in medical oncology/hematology. She is nationally certified as a family practice nurse practitioner by the American Nursing Credentialing Center, and is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society. She earned her master's degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University.

    Biography

    Eric Fountain MD, MA is a hematologist and oncologist with interests that include lymphoma, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers.

    Dr. Fountain taught high school science and mathematics before beginning his career in medicine, and his experiences as a teacher as well as his own family’s struggles with cancer shaped his personalized approach to cancer care. For both benign and malignant conditions, his management is tailored to the biology of disease, latest treatments, and most importantly, a patient’s unique personal circumstances to promote physical and mental well-being. 

    Dr. Fountain’s scholarly works on platelet disorders and immunotherapy in rare disorders have been published in numerous journals. At MD Anderson Cancer Center, he led a multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes in patients who receive mechanical filters to prevent blood clots.

    Dr. Fountain lives in Boise with his wife, a St. Luke’s OB/GYN, and their children.

    William Kreisle, MD is the medical director of St. Luke's Cancer Institute – Center for Blood Cancer Therapy’s Blood and Marrow Transplant program. Dr. Kreisle earned his bachelor's degree from Stanford University.

She earned her master's degree in nursing, family nurse practitioner, from Idaho State University.

    Biography

    Neil Majithia, MD specializes in the care of patients with cancer and blood disorders. He has participated in research and authored publications pertaining to cancers of the breast, colon, pancreas, lung, head and neck, as well as multiple myeloma. One of his goals has been to optimize quality-of-life during cancer care, including development of strategies to avoid or mitigate treatment-related toxicity.

    Dr. Majithia believes in effective communication with patients and their family members, and he strives to understand their preferences and values in order to provide appropriate guidance during their care. In his view, caring for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions is a privilege, and he cherishes the relationships he develops in his clinic.

    Biography

    Clinton Morgan, MD has a passion for oncology, hematology, and delivering excellent, high-quality care close to home. He also has special interest in newer treatment therapies, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Dr. Morgan's focus extends beyond treatment as well, and he is committed to getting to know his patients personally, improving their quality of life, and helping them make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

    Prior to joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Morgan practiced medical oncology and hematology in Lewiston, Idaho, where he became familiar with rural medicine and outreach clinics. He has worked closely with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and has served as volunteer faculty with the University of Washington.

    Dr. Morgan earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University prior to beginning his medical education. As an Idaho native, he is happy to live in the Treasure Valley with his family. They all enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, the outdoors, and family vacations. Dr. Morgan also enjoys gardening, reading, and cooking.

    Phatama Padavanija, MD treats patients with all types of cancer and blood disorders, with a special interest in treating patients with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lymphomas, and colorectal cancer. Dr. Padavanija enjoys participating as an investigator in clinical research. Her philosophy of patient care is to treat people with care, compassion, and respect. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

    Biography

    Jashmin Patel, MD is passionate about providing excellent, personalized, and compassionate hematology and oncology evidence-based care to her patients. She is devoted to providing the best options for treatment and working toward a positive outcome.

    Dr. Patel has published in the New England Journal of Medicine and served as principal investigator in clinical trials involving a range of cancers, including, but not limited to, breast cancers, myelodysplastic syndromes, leukemias, lung cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and colon cancer. She has a special interest in the treatment of breast cancer and women's health.

    Prior to her medical education, Dr. Patel earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in molecular and cellular biology from Vanderbilt University. She is a native Tennessean, now proud to call Boise home with her husband, also a physician at St. Luke’s.

    Biography

    Brooke Pearson, NP-C is a family nurse practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has an interest in the management of chronic kidney disease due to her experience as a nurse practitioner in internal medicine and in caring for kidney transplant patients at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Brooke earned her bachelor’s degree from Boston College and her master’s degree in nursing from Samuel Merritt University.

    Biography

    Finn Petersen, MD became involved in the first bone marrow transplants (BMT) in Denmark while in medical school, and after medical school orchestrated the first BMT done for acute leukemia in Denmark. After his fellowship, he joined the faculty at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and rose to the rank of assistant professor. Afterward, Dr. Petersen accepted a position as full professor at the University of Utah. While there he served as medical director and later program director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, which encompassed the University of Utah's and Intermountain Healthcare's adult BMT programs as well as a pediatric BMT program at Primary Children's Medical Center. He later consolidated adult BMT at the Intermountain Healthcare's LDS Hospital, developing an integrated BMT and hematological malignancy program (blood cancer), focusing on acute leukemia care. In 2015, Dr. Petersen was named one of Utah's Health Care Heroes for his work in establishing and growing a hematological malignancy center of excellence within Intermountain Healthcare.

    Dr. Petersen is currently working to develop and lead an allogenic (donor) blood and marrow transplant program at St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute as part of our new "heme-malignancy" (blood cancer) program.

    Dr. Petersen is internationally known for his long-standing work focusing on complications related to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and is an author and co-author of over 180 peer reviewed scientific publications, books, or book chapters. He is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences on topics of infections and treatment-related complications in blood and marrow transplantation and acute leukemia treatment.

    Lauryn Pyke, PA-C is a board certified physician assistant. She has experience in primary care and psychiatry, dealing with a broad range of acute and chronic physical and mental health conditions. She also spent three years at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute working on adult clinical research trials.

    Lauryn earned her bachelor’s degree in human biology from Boise State University and her physician assistant degree from Idaho State University. She is a member of the Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants.

    Biography

    Travis G. Williams, DO has a special interest in malignant hematology. During his residency, he researched, presented, and published articles on donor-transmitted non-leukemic promyelocytic sarcoma, acute myeloid leukemia, metastatic papillary renal cell carcinoma, and cancer medicine rate of complete diagnostic testing. He also earned Chief Fellow and Resident of the Year awards.

    Dr. Williams earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Idaho State University. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology. He currently chairs a team of IT experts and serves as the St. Luke's Cancer Institute IT Medical Director. In his free time, Dr. Williams enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his family.

    Norman Zuckerman, MD has special interest in anemias and genitourinary cancers. He continues to be passionate about oncology, especially as newer targeted therapies and symptom control medicines are prolonging life and improving quality of life for his patients. As the director of the Integrative Medicine program at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, Dr. Zuckerman considers all options – conventional and alternative – worthy of discussion.
